"Washed hands are caring hands!"
"Don’t pass the bug, make hand washing a must."
Many more quotes like these are being created to spread the awareness about hand washing and hand hygiene. The need to wash our hands become more important especially after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world this year. However, unfortunately washing hands frequently can result in unpleasant effects such as dryness, flaky and cracked skin. And these can be extremely awful at times!
Our skin acts as a barrier for our body to protect it against everyday exposure to external elements. The skin is comprised of two layers i.e. the epidermis and dermis. Epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin that is covered in lipids, oils and fatty compounds that act as a safeguard which also maintains the moisture in our skin. When we wash our hands with soap it not just washes away the surface debris but also strips the epidermis that carries essential natural oils. In order to keep our hands safe from dryness and its other effects, it is necessary to keep our hands well moisturized.
Following are a few tips that will help in minimizing damage and maintaining healthier hands. Have a look:
It is always recommended to use gentle, natural and liquid hand wash specifically designed for the skin. Make sure to avoid harsh soaps or detergents that contain synthetic chemicals and fragrances. Also, after washing hands in warm water for at least 20 seconds make sure to pat dry and apply a hand cream moisturizer immediately to lock in moisture.
You may find a wide range of hand moisturizers in the market, but the hand cream moisturizers are often more effective and nourishing as these are oil-based formula. On the other hand, lotions are water based products that may dry out faster after application. One more thing you need to keep in mind that it is always better to use clean formulated hand lotions, creams and balms that are devoid of synthetic chemicals and fragrances as these can irritate already fragile skin.
Apply hand cream moisturizers or lotions generously throughout the day that will help in maintaining moisture balance. Creams and ointments are thicker as compared to lotions; hence restores the surface barrier of the skin more effectively.
For extremely dry skin, intensive moisture treatment is necessary. In such cases applying hand moisturizers before bedtime and put on cotton gloves as it will trap in the moisture and allow your skin to fully absorb the oils overnight while you are sleeping.
If you have sensitive skin make sure to opt for an unscented hand cream moisturizer or lotion as fragrances are a common contact allergen.
Avoiding frequent hand washing is something that we cannot afford anymore, howeverwe can avoid dry, irritated skin by making a habit of moisturizing our hands immediately after every wash, throughout the day, and especially at bedtime. Care your hands and your hands will thank you!
